Frank Herbert's Dune. My aunt had given me her old paperback copy when I was around thirteen. It was the first "adult" book I ever read.

There are several... all of the original Dune books by the great Frank Herbert, George Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, Neil Gaiman's American Gods... I could go on.

Almost everyone I've read. I have a wierd sence of humor, I laugh at pretty much everything.

Stephen King's Dark Tower- when Roland finally made it to the tower... I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it.

Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman. While I was reading this it was the first time I ever remember being envious of a writers talent.

There is no such thing.

Hiatus

My little blogger vacation was not planned. In fact it was rather aggravating, to say the very least.

The month of August began like any other, (I’ll not bore you with the details), that is until one day around lunchtime my mother comes to my job to tell me that my phone was out of service. (What the hell? ) Honestly though, I wasn’t too concerned, I figured there was a problem with the phone line and it would be sorted out soon enough. (No big deal, right?)

But later that day I come home from work only to find that my dsl isn’t working either! (What the hell?!) So I drive to my moms house, all irate, and call the phone company. I was just beginning to tell the lady operator off when she informs me that the reason my services have been disconnected is due to lack of payment! “What?! There has obviously been some kind of mistake!” I tell her, indignant as hell, “I sent a check in weeks ago.” she continues to give me this BS about how no payment was received and I should take the matter up with the bank.

So now I call the bank. At this point it is beginning to be chore trying to play nice, but the teller who answers is one I know pretty well, and I believe her when she says she will do what she can to find out why the phone company hasn’t received payment. I wait on the line while she checks out a few things and after a few minutes of listening to her frantic typing she proceeds to tell me the reason payment wasn’t deferred was because there is no check on file! (What the Fuck?! I sent the damn thing out weeks ago!) She then tells me to try talking with someone at the post office.

Now I’m more than a little pissed off, (and since I’ve always secretly thought there was some kind of postal plot against me), I decide it might be better if I go down there in person. And as luck would have it, a friend of mine works at the local post office, so when I get there, I call her over and unload my whole sad tale. She agrees to help, and after checking the outgoing mail, the returned mail and the dead letter file, she still fails to find anything addressed to me or from me.

Now enough is enough! I’m super pissed, and all out of people to yell at, But what’s worse, is all kinds of wild conspiracy theories have started forming in my diluted little brain. So before I give in to total paranoia, I decide to check my mail one last time.

So I drive back home, go to my mailbox and what do I find? My damn phone bill! It turns out, (genius that I am), I had the bill turned the wrong way in the envelope, so that my address was facing out instead of the phone companies address. It came back the day after I sent it out and since I never check my mail, the damn thing sat in the mailbox for about three weeks! Ooops! I guess I should pay more attention to what I’m doing, or failing that, I should at least check my mail more often.

All this past week I have been toying with the idea of playing hookey from work. No particular reason, I've just had various errands piling up that I cant seem to fit into my regular off day routine. My Mothers Madness

My mother is a lunatic. While I mean that affectionately of course, it still doesn't cange the fact that she has lost her mind. She has decided , out of all the things in the world to do, to make a giant rubberband ball. A Giant Rubberband Ball!!!

When she first told me about her grand idea, I figured that she'd get bored after a week or two and give up, like I usually do. But not my mother, two and a half months later she is still at it. And this thing is frickin' huge! It weighs about 800 lbs! An 800 lb Rubberband Ball!!!

What she plans to do with this monstrosity is beyond me but least it keeps her from bugging me about having kids.

today was a good day. i finished all the crap i had to do at work, put in (and was approved) for my vacation, and picked up seasons one and two of northern exposure. yay! the only down side to this was that i spent my grocery money doing it. but at least next week when im starving and have nothing to eat, i will be well entertained.

The Stone Cutter

There was once a stone cutter who was unhappy with both himself and with his position in life. One day, as he passed by a wealthy merchant's house, he looked through the open gateway. There, he saw many fine possessions and important visitors.
"How powerful that merchant must be!" thought the stone cutter.
He became very envious and wished that he could be like the merchant.
Suddenly, to his great surprise, he became the merchant, enjoying more luxuries and power than he had ever imagined, but envied and detested by those less wealthy than himself.
Soon a high official passed by, carried in a sedan chair, accompanied by attendants and escorted by soldiers beating gongs. Everyone, no matter how wealthy, had to bow low before the procession.
"How powerful that official is!" thought the stone cutter. "I wish that I could be a high official!"
No sooner were the words spoken than he became the high official, carried everywhere in his embroidered sedan chair, feared and hated by the people all around.
It was a hot summer day, so the official felt very uncomfortable in the sticky sedan chair. He looked up at the sun. It shone proudly in the sky, unaffected by his presence.
"How powerful the sun is!" he thought. "I wish that I could be the sun!"
Immediately, he became the sun, shining fiercely down on everyone, scorching the fields, cursed by the farmers and laborers.
But a huge black cloud moved between him and the earth, so that his light could no longer shine on everything below.
"How powerful that storm cloud is!" he thought. "I wish that I could be a cloud!"
Then he became the cloud, flooding the fields and villages, shouted at by everyone. But soon he found that he was being pushed away by some great force, and realized that it was the wind.
"How powerful it is!" he thought. "I wish that I could be the wind!"
Thus, he became the wind, blowing tiles from the roofs of houses, uprooting trees, feared and hated by all below him. But after a while, he ran up against something that would not move, no matter how forcefully he blew against it - a huge, towering rock.
"How powerful that rock is!" he thought. "I wish that I could be a rock!"
And so, the stonecutter became the rock, more powerful than anything else on earth.
But as he stood there, he heard the sound of a hammer pounding a chisel into the hard surface, and felt himself being changed.
"What could be more powerful than rock?" he thought.
The rock looked down and saw far below him the lone figure of a stone cutter.
